Participation

Please note: Cyberbullies and trolls of every stripe are barred from participating in my awards programs and other online activities. People who make targets of other people and work to ruin other people's reputations are not welcome on any of my e-spaces.

I have NO desire to associate in any way with people who behave badly towards anyone. People who refuse to accept that are welcome to set up their own awards. It's not hard.

Honesty: the best policy

I must confess I didn't see this coming. Not at all. The responses I've had have astounded me. In fact, the most astounding is, "How would you feel if Marta excluded someone you liked from the MEFAs?"

I'd accept her right to run her stuff as she so desires. If she wants to ban me from this year's MEFAs, I won't object. If I've voted for someone she was offended by, I didn't realise I was doing so. I wouldn't insult her by doing so deliberately. I'd consider that wrong, and couldn't bring myself to do such a thing, however much I like a particular writer's story.

That she's able to rise above that kind of thing is impressive, but I can't get there myself. I'm too sore. I'm all kinds of sore. In any case, I've probably turned everyone against me by not being transparent about this, so I might as well not take part this year.

The fact is, all my online activities are completely subjective. All my e-spaces are only open to people I either get along with or regard neutrally. This is my policy everywhere. To be perfectly honest, I thought people realised that. If people fail to understand why, I can't understand them, but I can't argue or object because I won't get through. I've tried.

The Archives of Excellence has references to "we" because most of the featured writers were recommended by other people. I've never heard of most of them, but when I checked their stuff out, I saw it was good enough and let it on. Some of the fandoms were completely new to me, and in one or two cases I didn't really like them, but the quality of the writing is high, so they're on.

Per the advice I've been given, I'm going to change the rules of the Golden Quill Award
s.

I've been offered no concessions for changing my mind, so I won't give ground. I'll restructure it so it's clear that it's a purely subjective Wendy thing and only people I like or regard neutrally can participate. Since this clears the field for people who don't usually win awards to get something, it should free them up a bit.

Taking part in the Awards is empahtically NOT taking sides: you don't have to like ME to take part - just being neutral will do. AND I'm announcing a one-time general amnesty on all the new haters IF they quit the carping, which means they can be nominated. Voting is completely anonymous, so it doesn't matter who votes and I've got no control over it. That is as far as I'll go.

I've copied some of the comments here into a sticky posts which will always show at the top of the page. This is repeated at the Golden Quill Awards website on the front page, and on the Archives of Excellence rec site on the About page. On the Archives of Excellence Fanfiction Library, it's in the TOS.

Archives of Excellence Fanfiction Library

Friends, I've finally gone and done it: set up an archiving site where Excellent writers can upload their own stuff at will. I'll take pretty much any family-friendly fare of any genre. This includes non-fiction, scripts, lists - anything you can think of. I'll also take original fiction and essays, etc. It's called Archives of Excellence Fanfiction Library.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about it here.

Features:

* Writers can upload their own stories.

* Original fiction is welcome.

* Non-stories such as lists, scripts, essays, owners' manuals and the like are welcome.

* The site offers default icons. I'm in the process of working out how to add more. Bear with me.

* Links to the associated sites, blogs and communities provides continuity.

* High quality fare is guaranteed as each writer is asked to apply to admin@archives-of-excellence before registering. Featured authors on the Archives of Excellence rec site are exempt from this - I already know they're absolutely brilliant.

Feel free to email me at admin@archives-of-excellence.9f.com to make suggestions for improving the site.

From the Sidelines

Ladies and gentlemen, the polls for the February writing challenge, From the Sidelines, are up on Proprofs.com. This is to allow people without ff.net accounts to vote. Voters do not need to login. Multiple votes are enabled. Good luck, everyone.

March Writing Challenge: Caught off Camera

The Archives of Excellence writing challenge for March is Caught off Camera.

What are your favorite fictional characters doing between books or movies? The writers aren't writing; the directors aren't directing. Here's the twist: the characters KNOW they're being written about. They understand that they are "fictional" or "created." Are they pleased with what's happening to them? How are the characters that have died reacting to being killed off? Get together with one of your FanFiction friends or acquaintances and start brainstorming!

Challenge issued by AliuIce0814 on the Story Challenge thread on the Can We Talk? forum at Fanfiction.net.

February Entry: The Distance Between Us

Title: The Distance Between Us
Summary: While in Thorold, Maerad and Cadvan stay at the home of Elenxi's brother, Ankil. Little do they know that the old man's story is one of pain and sacrifice, of love and peace.
Character: Ankil or Kiranta

"The sound of her weeping followed me through the village, tearing my heart into tiny pieces. I looked back, and there she was, standing in the middle of the road: lost and forlorn. “Goodbye, Kiranta,” I whispered, before facing the long road that would lead me out of the mountains and away from my love."

So it begins

I've decided to launch an LJ community to support the Archives of Excellence and the Golden Quill Awards. Anyone who wants to take part in the monthly challenges is welcome to do so, and the best stories entered will be added to the story challenges page at the Archives.

This month's challenge is From the Sidelines, and I'll be taking entries till the 27th February.

The idea is to write a fic of 1500 words or less about a character who appears only once in your particular fandom. Any story of any genre for any fandom is welcome as long as it's family-friendly.

Please feel free to post your entries here if you'd rather not do so at ff.net.
